Stick To It

January 30

I discovered at the last minute that I needed to create a display board representing what I teach in my classroom.  I began to gather supplies and ideas began to flow.  But the next step would be how to attach buttons, a tape measure, a money can, measuring spoons and other items to a display board.  A glue stick would not be strong enough and I had too many items for my fingers to survive the hot glue gun so I resorted to a can of spray adhesive.  The only problem with this choice is everything around gets sticky.  However, I did discover the t-shirt needed a few straight pins, the measuring spoons had to be tied down, and clear strapping tape was needed for the can and a spool of thread.  The end result was more than one form of stickiness was needed but in the end I was rather proud of my display board and my students offered cash for their next assignment!

We have so many selections when it comes to stick something to something.  If only we had a glue stick, packing tape, or spray adhesive to force us to "stick to our program"!  Wednesday night the words "I may not like activity but I love the results" have stuck with me as motivation to move more. In addition to our PP system, WW provides us with many Tools for Living to be successful but as a member we have to select the one that works for us.  The Tool of choice may work for a period of time and sometimes the Tool may be a daily choice. Just like my display board needed more than one form of adhesive, one Tool may not be enough for you. An anchor, learning from experience, your winning outcome, positive self talk, or asking for help - what keeps you focused and stuck to your journey?

Just 30 Minutes!

Sunday, January 23

I look forward to my morning routine.... coffee, the morning paper (which does not take long to read since I have read online sources before bed), and the morning Sudoku.  I exercise my brain every morning because I read that it stimulates your brain to stay healthy and active in the fight against dementia and other aging issues.  This whole process is 30 minutes.  I do the puzzle in ink to make me think twice before I settle on a number and I always grade my puzzle with a happy face!  There are the mornings that the level 5 puzzle will get the best of me and I have to finish when I return home in the afternoon.  I think about the puzzle during the day realizing I began my day without completing my morning routine.

I have now been faced with the challenge to exercise my body to fight osteoporosis in my right hip. But why do I have such struggles with moving more?  Is it the flashbacks to the one piece knit gym suit that I had to stretch the neck out to step into everyday in PE class or just the lack of emotional commitment?

When I became a lifetime member in 2002, I did not exercise to enhance my weight loss journey.  But I soon discovered that I could not maintain my weight loss without some form of daily activity.  I do enjoy walking so I stepped out and made life inconvienent.  I park and walk, steps instead of elevators, and I exercise during commercials of my favorite shows in the evening.  But now the challenge is to move more!

Get rid of the term exercise if moving more is a challenge for you and get ACTIVE!  What can you do that you enjoy that is above and beyond your normal activity.  Take the stairs and check out the benefit in this issue of WW magazine!  Start by earning 2 activity points a day until you increase it to 6 activity points a day. Remember activity points can be swapped for food or just used to enhance your journey. But more importantly, activity must be something you enjoy and feel comfortable doing!

So the challenge is on....I not only know what I need to do but what I have to do, how about you?  What can you do to move more to enhance your journey? Please share your choice of activity, it may be the inspiration someone else needs to get moving!

Here is a walk down memory lane that will help you to move more at home...

Flexibility to Survive

Monday, January 17

Do you remember the 70's hit Rubberband Man by The Spinners?  The teacher in me wanted to find the meaning behind the lyrics.  So all of my searches came up with NOTHING! But each time we talk of flexible restraints I use a rubberband as an anchor to help us remember how to flex and bend but not break during the week.  So here is my personal interpretation of the lyrics for this song and flexible restraints.

  • "You're bound to lose control when the Rubberband starts to jam"....first we do not have to lose control as we start to stretch and flex our control. A few extra points may allow you to get over a hump in your day that otherwise would cause you to quit the program!
  • "I laughed so hard cause the man got down When he finally reached his goal"...you better believe we are going to laugh, cry, and cheer when we reach our goals by celebrating every milestone along the way!
  • "Just a movin, just a movin, just a move-move-movin Just a Rubberband, Rubberband man"....how appropriate this last line reminds us that we must be movin' all of the time. (next weeks topic)
So we can bend, stretch and not break by living our program with flexible restraints by using our WPPA. WPPA of 49 gives a member the opportunity to learn how to live this program within their life.  Member research is showing that members who understand and use their WPPA have the greatest success. A member who realizes that a holiday, an event, a little extra snack, or a roadblock can cause or hinder their success will use their WPPA to survive.  I refer to WPPA as overdraft protection....the points are there if needed but don't use them just because they are there!  Weight management is always about energy in vs energy out so if the energy in is greater than the energy out there is no surprise when I step up on the ww scale!  Unfortunately, WPPA are not roll over points that one can build for a future event.

So it is your decision... break them into 7 extra points using some or none on a daily basis or save all 49 for a big event or don't use them at all...it is up to you!!!!  How do you take advantage of your 49?

And for those who do not remember this great hit...get up and learn this 70's dance..it is pre-Zumba!

Need to Know

Friday, January 14

After a very frustrating week of ice and snow, I decided I needed a way to touch base with my ww members.  Roads were closed not only to work places and our meetings but to the gym as well. Our options included exercising at home or entertaining our self with comfort foods to stay warm!  Show Me The Weigh will become a weekly update from me and provide an additional tool for you to have a successful week.

In case you did not see Dr.Oz this week be sure to watch the clip below.  Liz is the leader in our GSS book and led the early meetings of PP.  Liz inspires me but so does this empty nest mom. http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/empty-nester-weight-gain-fixes-pt-1

Another tool for success is the new PP calculator.  For easy tips on using your new calculator check out this video at http://www.weightwatchers.com/productinfo.

Did you include plenty of power foods on your grocery list this week?  Remember, they are your shortcut to success!
